Lets start this gem auction travelogue with the recent Belmont Brazilan emerald auction and a group photo to introduce few noticeable industry friends i had great discussions with during that auction: Left to right: - Isabella Yan (@izza_gem ), a freelance consultant providing her services ( communications, PR, client introductions, stock control, setting things up...) to Bonas. She is also a trade journalist who recently wrote an interesting article in Rappaport about rough gem auctions in Bangkok (see for more on her social media) - Me (no introduction needed) - Marcelo Ribeiro (@mar_rifer ), the Director of Belmont (@belmont_emeralds ). Marcelo is the grand son of the owner of Belmont (a fascinating emerald deposit discovered 46 years ago on a cattle ranch in Minas Gerais state of Brazil). After studying mining engineering, he developed this family owned mine as one of the most modern and efficient in the world. - Cyrille Djankoff (aka @cyrilledjankoff ), the head of Colored Stones at Bonas (aka @bonasgroup ) since 2020. Cyrille, a genuine gemstone adventurer with an incredible experience mining gems from Tajikistan to Africa, has been behind all the gem auctions organized by Bonas in Bangkok for the past few years. . A very interesting article to write, carefully weighing both perspectives. One way to prevent confusion between lab-grown and natural diamonds is to prioritise educating consumers about their differences. There is often a tendency to conflate the two, when in reality, sellers should treat them as distinct categories targeting different consumer demographics.
